Heaps of easy cycling options, fairy-tale landscapes and little traffic: The Sognefjord and other areas of Fjord Norway is a hit for families with children who love bicycling.

Idyllic fjord villages, quiet gravel roads and several National Tourist Routes are some of the gems just waiting for you and your bike in the Sognefjord area.

One of the area's highlights is the famous 82-kilometer long Rallarvegen (the navvies’ road), which has been named Norway's finest bicycle road by the travel magazine Travel and Vacation. The road runs from Haugastøl to Flåm, and one option is to start your trip by renting a bike in Flåm and then take the Flåm Railway to Vatnahalsen.

Bikes are available to rent in most villages near the Sognefjord, and the magnificent scenery can be enjoyed no matter what speed you prefer.

Tour cycling offers in the Sognefjord area

Rallarvegen - 80 km of sightseeing

Rallarvegen (the navvies' road), built during the construction of the Bergen Railway, has become Norway's most cherished cycle road in recent years.

The 80-kilometre long road winds up and down in a lush landscape, from the mountain terrain of Haugastøl down to the fjord in the Flåm valley. Due to the altitude difference (from around 1,000 metres down to 0 metres above sea level), make sure you cycle westwards if you want to take it easy.

Price from NOK 1,000 per person.

Bike and hike to Drivandefossen waterfall

Join a biking and hiking tour through the natural and cultural landscapes of the tranquil Mørkrid valley.

After cycling for around seven kilometres, you continue on foot up to the impressive Drivande waterfall. Sit down to rest, take in the views and listen to the sound of the waterfall while you get to taste some local flatbread and cured meat.

This is an easy/moderate tour that takes 3 to 3,5 hours.

Price from NOK 500 per person (adult). Children under 14 years: NOK 300.

Bike and hike + fishing at Bølifossen

Get to know Bølifossen, a beautiful place known as the “the pearl in the Mørkrid valley”, on this tour that includes biking, hiking and (optional) fishing.

After eight kilometres of cycling, you embark on a one and a half hour hike on a rocky, uphill path before you arrive at the secluded, peaceful Bølifossen. Explore the surroundings, taste some local flatbread and cured meat and if you like, go fishing.

Price from NOK 750 per person (adult). Children under 14 years: NOK 500.

    Safety on two wheels

Tips to keep you on the straight and narrow

When cycling on the roads in Norway, the same traffic regulations and road signs apply to you as to cars and other vehicles: Keep to the right, give way to those coming from your right, and don’t drink and bike.

You may cycle on the pavement, but adapt your speed. You may not cycle on motorways and dual carriageways. Always wear a helmet when cycling. A high visibility vest is a good idea, especially on busy roads. Only children under the age of 10 may be carried as passengers.

    Your bike must have

In darkness and poor visibility make sure your bike is equipped with a white or yellow light in the front, and a red light in the back. You also need a red reflector in the rear and white or yellow reflectors on the pedals.

Make sure your bike has two brakes that work independently of each other and a bicycle bell.
