With masterly constructions like the Trollstigen road and the Atlantic road, the region of Fjord Norway offers some of the most remarkable road cycling adventures in the country.

Road cycling in Northwest

It is in the northwestern part of Fjord Norway you find the Trollstigen hairpin bends. If you have a competitive streak, put yourself to the test in the Trollstigen race or the Trollveggen Triathlon, held in Åndalsnes every year. While in the area, make sure you take the opportunity to cycle the scenic Atlantic Road on the coast between Kristiansund and Molde.

Cycling by the coast is also well worth trying – a favourite is to go island hopping with shorter stages and ferry crossings. For the experience of a lifetime, you can try Bike & Sail - staying on board a boat on the fjord at night and cycling in the fjord landscape at day.

Climb Trollstigen by electric bike

The beauty of an electric bicycle is that it’s up to you how hard you want to work – and that you don’t have to be fit as a fiddle to join a guided tour of the Trollstigen road, with the notorious 11 hairpin bends.

Enjoy the fabulous views and finish with a gourmet two-course meal at the top. Along the way, your guide will tell you more about this engineering masterpiece.

Price from NOK 1,150 per person, including guide and gourmet lunch.

Bike & Sail with Romsdal Adventure

Embark on a fjord cycling adventure like no other in a small group of 6-10 people. Over six days, you will go from one stunning view to another, including classic landmarks like the engineering masterpiece Atlantic Road, the hairpin bends of the Trollstigen road, the beautiful Geirangerfjord and Hjørundfjord, and the art nouveau city of Ålesund.

Your home for the week is the beautifully restored naval vessel Gassten, where a private chef prepares wonderful, fresh meals for you every day.

Price from GBP 2,700 per person.

Road cycling in Bergen and Voss

Quite a bit further south, in the Stølsheimen area between Bergen and Voss, there are several fjord route cycling options along quiet local roads. Choose between short, easy trips and longer tours with climbs that are rewarded by impressive views at the top, and be sure to enjoy the beauty of the wide mountains, deep valleys, fjords and the beautiful coast as you ride.

In September 2017, the streets of Bergen and immediate surroundings were hosting the UCI Road World Championship – one of the biggest sporting events in the world. Come and see for yourself why this area was chosen!

Bike the fjords: The Nærøyfjord

A three-day tour of the UNESCO world heritage area of the Nærøyfjord, including attractions like the Tvindefossen waterfall, the Nærøydalen valley and the Flåm railway. You also have a chance to visit a Viking exhibition and try local beer tasting in the village of Flåm.

The tour is available on selected dates in May, June and September. It is recommended for intermediate riders.

Price from NOK 8,900 per person with a guide, or from NOK 6,400 without a guide.

Bike the fjords: The Hardangerfjord

Immerse yourself in the extraordinary landscape around Bergen and Voss on this 8-day bike tour. Starting in Bergen, you will explore cultural and natural landmarks like the Hardangerfjord and Edvard Grieg’s home.

Accommodation is arranged in the elegant Historic Hotels along the way, and a support vehicle will transport your luggage. The tour is recommended for intermediate riders.

Price from NOK 25,300 per person with a guide, or from NOK 20,600 without a guide.

Hiking and biking in Norwegian footsteps

Explore Norwegian nature, culture and history on this active round trip by bike and on foot.

After visiting the Bjørn West Museum in Matre, you will follow in the footsteps of the Norwegian resistance during the Second World War. Along the way you will pass breathtaking views, from the deep valley to the wide mountains. Dinner is served at Stordalen Fjellstove.

Price from NOK 1,650 per person.

The fjord cycling route (5 days)

On this five day bike ride in Fjord Norway you will experience narrow valleys, fjords, islands and mountains. The trip also includes a trip by boat that takes you out to the islands, where you will cycle through idyllic cultural landscapes.

Along the way you will sleep tightly at the Stordalen Mountain Lodge, the unique Brekkestranda Fjord Hotel, Eivindvik Fjordhotell and the farm hotel Frøyseth Gardsmat.

Price from NOK 6,530 per person.

    Safety on two wheels

Tips to keep you on the straight and narrow

When cycling on the roads in Norway, the same traffic regulations and road signs apply to you as to cars and other vehicles: Keep to the right, give way to those coming from your right, and don’t drink and bike.

You may cycle on the pavement, but adapt your speed. You may not cycle on motorways and dual carriageways. Always wear a helmet when cycling. A high visibility vest is a good idea, especially on busy roads. Only children under the age of 10 may be carried as passengers.

    Your bike must have

In darkness and poor visibility make sure your bike is equipped with a white or yellow light in the front, and a red light in the back. You also need a red reflector in the rear and white or yellow reflectors on the pedals.

Make sure your bike has two brakes that work independently of each other and a bicycle bell.
